AEL issued an official statement expressing its satisfaction following the Cyprus Football Association’s (KOP) decisions regarding changes to the Federation’s judicial bodies.
The statement: “The Limassol Athletic Union expresses its satisfaction with the decision of the Board of Directors of the Cyprus Football Association to implement substantial changes to the way of the Federation’s judicial and disciplinary bodies, by replacing the positions of Sports Judge and Disciplinary Prosecutor with collective, three-member bodies.
This development constitutes a significant acknowledgment that the existing system was flawed and in need of substantial changes and reforms. This is a position that AEL has consistently articulated with evidence and determination in recent years, repeatedly highlighting the serious weaknesses, the inconsistency in the application of regulations, and the decisions that have undermined the sense of justice and the fans’ trust in the institutions of Cypriot soccer. AEL has never hesitated to challenge established notions and practices when it found that the principles of justice were being undermined. This is what the history, principles, and ideals of our Club demand.
At the same time, there were also those who chose to remain silent in the face of the system’s ills, either because they benefited from it or because they did not wish to upset the balance. AEL, on the other hand, never compromised on its principles. It remained steadfast in its positions, even when it found itself alone in demanding the obvious: a game of soccer in which everyone is judged by the same rules.
Changing the structure is only the first step. The success or failure of the reform will be determined by the individuals who are called upon to serve on the new committees. For this reason, AEL makes it clear that it will not accept, under any circumstances, the possible participation of Mr. Vryonidis and/or Mr. Nikolaou in any of the new committees, should there be any consideration of their appointment. The credibility of the new institutions cannot be built by recycling individuals who have been associated with a period that sparked intense controversy and shook the confidence of a large portion of the sports-loving public and the clubs.
AEL’s position is clear and non-negotiable. The renewal of these institutions cannot be limited to changes in the structure and names of the governing bodies. It requires substantive reform, with individuals of recognized standing, independence, and integrity who enjoy the trust and broad acceptance of all clubs. Only in this way can we ensure that the new institutions will operate with objectivity, consistency, and transparency. The true success of the reform will be judged by the decisions that follow and, above all, by the individuals who will be called upon to serve it.
AEL will continue to closely monitor developments and intervene institutionally where necessary. We have never sought special treatment, nor will we do so in the future. We will, however, continue to assert with the same determination those principles dictated by the history, principles, and values of our Club.”
