“The meeting took place in a very positive atmosphere, contrary to what some people have maliciously tried to suggest recently—that there was a confrontation.”
This was stated by DIKO Secretary-General Giorgos Solomou on the Alpha News program when asked to comment on the new meeting held today between President of the Republic Nicos Christodoulides, DIKO President Nikolas Papadopoulos, and members of the party’s Secretariat. He explained that the two sides agreed to hold regular meetings and that the discussion took place on a constructive basis, with the aim of ensuring the success of the country’s governance and continuing their cooperation.
Mr. Solomou clarified that nothing regarding the upcoming cabinet reshuffle was discussed, while the discussion focused on improving the government’s work.
“It is clearly a constitutional right of the President of the Republic, but he himself has said that if he decides to proceed, he will discuss the matter with DIKO and inform them of his decision.”
According to Mr. Solomou, the meeting lasted 1 hour and 45 minutes, and the President of the Republic was the first to speak, leaving him satisfied with what he heard regarding ways to improve cooperation between the government and DIKO.
“The pre-election program drawn up three years ago needs to be updated, and DIKO’s political groups will contribute to these now-regular meetings that will take place. Emphasis was placed on the political responsibility that DIKO assumes both in Parliament and in the public discourse, among those who support the government.”
The Secretary-General of DIKO noted that the party will remain in the coalition government until 2028, since, so far, there has been no word from President Christodoulides on what he will do in the upcoming 2028 presidential election.
“The discussion on what DIKO will do in the next elections will take place in November and December of the previous year. So we’ll be having that discussion over the next five to six months. We’ve started with district-wide committees—not specific names—to address the issues the public wants seen in Parliament.”
Mr. Solomou spoke of mutual recognition of DIKO’s role and contribution to the government, and called for this recognition to be even more emphatic on the part of the President of the Republic.
