Images from the small port of Paphos caused great concern, as petroleum products and oils covered a large portion of the water’s surface, literally turning it black.
The phenomenon was first noticed yesterday, but today its extent was clearly greater, as the pollution spread from the area of the Medieval Castle all the way to the side of Poseidon Avenue, covering a large part of the harbor’s waters.
Initially, according to what our station’s correspondent in Paphos, Kostas Nanos, suspicions initially focused on a possible leak from one of the moored vessels. However, based on the information available so far, a second possibility is also being considered: an oil spill that may have originated from collection areas at local recreational centers and businesses.
The exact cause of the pollution has not yet been determined, with the relevant authorities investigating all possible scenarios.
In the meantime, floating containment booms were deployed in the area, preventing the oil from spreading further into neighboring marine areas.
At the same time, specialized crews worked throughout the day to clean up the spill, using absorbent materials and specialized equipment, and the cleanup efforts are expected to continue tomorrow until the area is fully restored.
