Justice for the sacrifice of the resistance fighters will come only through an end to the occupation and the reunification of Cyprus, emphasized Deputy Government Spokesperson Yiannis Antoniou, in his commemorative address during the memorial service for those who fell during the coup of July 15, 1974, which took place on Sunday morning at the Cathedral of Panagia Pantanassa (Catholic) in Limassol.
Mr. Antoniou characterized the coup of July 15, 1974, as a premeditated political act that led to the Turkish invasion, noting that today remains a day of mourning as long as the occupation and division of the homeland continue.
He also conveyed the assurance of the President of the Republic that resolving the Cyprus problem is the government’s top priority, emphasizing that, despite the difficulties, efforts are continuing to resume direct negotiations based on the agreed United Nations framework, the European acquis, and the principles of the European Union.
He also referred to the initiatives that, as he said, have helped reignite international interest in the Cyprus issue, expressing the hope that the ongoing processes will lead to the return of both sides to the negotiating table.
In conclusion, the Deputy Government Spokesperson stated that condemning the coup is a duty owed to historical truth and collective memory, paying tribute to the resistance fighters and assuring that the state will continue to work to vindicate their sacrifice.
