Tomorrow in Brussels, Konstantinos Kombos will present to the European Union’s foreign ministers the illegally signed memorandum of understanding that will facilitate the future transport of natural gas from Turkey to Cyprus in the future.
“The Foreign Minister will present to the Council the signing of the illegal ‘memorandum of understanding’ between Turkey and the occupied territories regarding the construction of a natural gas pipeline, denouncing Turkey for its new illegal actions.” Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Clarifying that, under international law, he emphasizes—including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea— the unilateral development of energy infrastructure, both on land and in the maritime zones of the Republic of Cyprus, without the Republic’s permission, constitutes a violation of its sovereignty and sovereign rights.
Occupied Areas
Ankara aims to connect the Anamur region in southern Turkey with the occupied town of Panagura within four years via a pipeline stretching 101 kilometers.
An agreement that was viewed positively by nearly the entire Turkish Cypriot press.
“A huge step for energy!” Halkin Sesi
“First step in a historic project” Kibris
“After water, now comes natural gas!” Vatan
“We are one, in thought and spirit” Hakikat
Military Movements
On the ground, the Turkish army continues its activities along the Green Line, installing electro-optical and thermal surveillance cameras, as revealed today by Fileleftheros.
“As sources at the Ministry of National Defense reported, the installation of cameras by the Turkish army is in response to the cameras installed by the Republic of Cyprus to monitor the buffer zone for illegal immigration and smuggling.” Phileleftheros
The upgrading of Turkish military positions has been in full swing over the past few months, not only in this specific area but also along the Green Line in West Nicosia.
