More people are coming under scrutiny in the investigation into the arson attacks in Thessaloniki that led to the death of Vagia Nestora, with Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis warning that more arrests are coming.
“In a few days, there will be developments in Thessaloniki regarding the Vagia Nestora case because others are involved, and those who attacked the other two homes will also be arrested,” the minister stated.
Speaking on SKAI TV, Mr. Chrysochoidis said that these were “professionals” and maintained that “they had planned the attack in advance; I don’t know if they intended to kill.”
It should be noted that the Hellenic Police has video footage showing the three suspects outside the home of New Democracy MP Aphrodite Nestora, in the days leading up to the incident, surveying the area.
The suspects appear before the investigating judge
The three suspects are appearing before the Thessaloniki investigating authorities at noon today (July 14) to answer charges of five felonies.
The two men, aged 29 and 24, and the 26-year-old woman who were arrested in Thessaloniki’s Chania district will face charges of:
- membership in a terrorist organization,
- murder with possible intent—both completed and attempted,
- explosion,
- arson, and
- violation of the weapons law (including possession of explosive materials).
According to the police statement, “these are the two principal perpetrators (a 29-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman), as well as a 24-year-old man who allegedly provided his apartment to the perpetrators as a hideout, both before and after the placement of the improvised explosive and incendiary device.”
They Deny the Charges
For their part, all three denied the charges brought against them by the police.
The first two gave no response to the authorities, reserving the right to present their defense during their hearing before the investigating judge.
For his part, the third suspect appears to have claimed that he did not know his co-defendants and that he had given the keys to the abandoned house to friends, without knowing for what purpose they would use it.
