The road connecting Frenaros with Deryneia has been designated a high-risk section. It has claimed many lives due to inadequate lighting, high speeds, and dangerous intersections—including the three young people who lost their lives in an accident that occurred in November 2024. The municipality is requesting the installation of fixed speed cameras on all roads connecting the village to neighboring villages.
Speaking on the “Alpha News” program, Frenaros Deputy Mayor Kostas Michael stated that the biggest problem lies in the high speeds at which drivers travel.
He noted that, in addition to the three-car accident, there were two other accidents, though none resulted in serious injuries. Regarding the actions taken by the municipality, Mr. Michael stated that he is in contact with Transportation Minister Alexis Vafeadis and that they have sent two letters requesting the installation of fixed cameras on all roads connecting the villageto the neighboring villages.

According to him, the aim of the proposal is to prevent drivers from speeding and, by extension, to improve road safety. He added that the roads are in need of improvement.
He noted, among other things, that the Minister of Transportation is supportive of this proposal and that it will be presented at the next road safety council meeting. According to Mr. Michael’s statements regarding road safety measures, the installation of street lighting on the Frenaros-Vrysoula road has been approved.
He also emphasized that “the fateful moment will come.”
The municipality, as he noted, has also put forward a proposal to create a traffic education park.
“We must not work only for today; we must also consider future generations.”
In his own remarks on the issue, Traffic Division Sergeant Kostas Asiekkis of the Police Headquarters, regarding the three-vehicle accident on the Frenaros – Deryneia, he noted that the only problem identified was the guardrail, which had sustained some damage due to the collision.
Regarding the proposal to install fixed speed cameras, Mr. Asiekkis stated that their installation is not required; but rather, in his view, mobile speed cameras should be installed. He added that, following the accident, the operating hours of the mobile speed cameras have been extended.
