The right of European Union member states to impose restrictions on the use of online applications that alert drivers to speed cameras and radar, has been granted by a ruling of the Court of Justice of the European Union.
Sergeant Tassos Asiekkis of the Traffic Division at Police Headquarters pointed out on the Alpha News program that these apps contribute to an increase in traffic violations and drastically reducethe effectiveness of measures to enforce speed limits and prevent serious or fatal traffic accidents.
As he noted, the practice of not disclosing the locations where radar or mobile speed cameras are in operation appears to be effective on Cypriot roads, since drivers are careful and alert throughout the entire road network.
Mr. Asiekkis invoked the authorities’ right to conduct “unannounced checks” on drivers, without, however, concealing the monitoring devices.
Regarding the European Court of Justice’s ruling, Mr. Asiekkis explained that it will be reviewed by the police and that it is possible the Legal Service’s assistance may be sought; however, he clarified that this concerns case law and not legislation.
