Atlanta authorities will be on high alert ahead of the World Cup semifinal between England and Argentina. The match will take place on Wednesday, with the two national teams reviving one of the most historic and intense rivalries in international soccer.

The city police announced that they will significantly increase their presence around the stadium, entertainment districts, and areas with high concentrations of fans. Additional personnel and resources have already been deployed to prevent incidents and ensure the safe conduct of this major match.

The authorities are well aware that the soccer rivalry between the two countries has a deep historical background. The dispute over the Falkland Islands—known in Argentina as the Malvinas—remains a sensitive issue, more than four decades after the 1982 war.

Tensions escalated further after Argentina’s victory over Egypt in the round of 16, when players from the “Albiceleste” were recorded chanting a slogan referring to the islands, as well as to Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi.

England is vying for its first World Cup final appearance since 1966, while Argentina is looking to defend its title. The stakes of the match, the historic rivalry, and the presence of thousands of fans make this semifinal one of the most challenging security operations of the tournament.
