The election process for the Super League presidency has once again reached an impasse, as Giannis Alafouzos and Vangelis Marinakis were tied in the vote once more.
Both received 7 votes, resulting in no president being elected for the second time. Katia Koxenoglou was appointed interim president, and a new election is expected to take place on Wednesday.
It remains to be seen whether anything can change, though at the moment it seems unlikely. Unless, of course, a new candidate emerges for the League presidency—something that has not yet been announced.
Of course, the Hellenic Football Federation’s (EPO) proposal that the presidency of the league be—in effect—shared was also put on the table. That is, Yiannis Alafouzos would serve as president one year and Vangelis Marinakis the next. The owner of Panathinaikos appeared open to this possibility, but the owner of Olympiacos was opposed to it.
The announcement in detail
“During today’s elections for the positions of President and Vice President of the Super League Board of Directors, following a tie between the two candidates for the position of President, in alphabetical order, Mr. Ioannis Alafouzos and Mr. Evangelos Marinakis, the Board of Directors unanimously decided that the Vice President, Ms. Aikaterini Koxenoglou, would remain in office, exercising the powers of the President, until July 15, at which time new elections will be held to elect a President and Deputy President.”
