Giorgos Pamboridis, a member of the Democratic Alarm party, is sending messages via Twitter to the party’s former president, Averof Neophytou, regarding the ongoing discussion about the 2028 presidential election.

Mr. Pamborides posted an article from the Reporter website, which cites sources close to Mr. Averof stating that “everyone’s ambition should be to resolve the Cyprus issue, not to secure political office.”

Reporter’s sources speak of a possible, last-ditch effort to resolve the Cyprus issue and note emphatically that it constitutes “an insult to the memory of Glafkos Clerides, at a time when intense activity is underway as a result of the enormous preparations made over the past two and a half years, and at a time when European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is appointing the Commission’s Executive Vice President— the party founded by Glafkos Clerides as the voice of reason and to spearhead a solution to the Cyprus problem —that is, DISY—is preoccupied with who its candidate will be in 2028.”

In his rather… particularly pointed statement, Mr. Pamboridis speaks of the personal agendas of political figures and lashes out at “those who surround themselves with advisors and staff while eyeing ministerial posts.”

“And those who set up election campaign headquarters and entertain party officials all day long. Cyprus is too small for us to hide… On the Cyprus issue, however, we will all be judged, starting with the government itself. I hope that no one will be found to be playing politics with the Cyprus issue to serve their own media tactics. Anyone who attempts to do so will bear the gravest responsibility, and they will certainly have me as an opponent, whoever they may be.”

Appearing as a guest on the “Alpha News” program, DISY Parliamentary Spokesperson Dimitris Dimitriou commented that within the party “we’re not really focusing on the presidential election,” making it clear that he himself is neither considering nor interested in a potential candidacy.

“Sometimes we make plans, and God laughs. I hope we see progress on the Cyprus issue and that the presidential elections remain off the political scene. We won’t suffer any harm. And I’ll say this, though I hope I’m not misunderstood: I wish we didn’t have elections if we could resolve the Cyprus issue and establish a new order of things.”

Also present was “Alma” MP Eirini Charalambidou was present, and when asked if she herself might run as a candidate, she said that decisions would be made at a later date and that “we haven’t discussed anything yet.”

“We’ll see in due course. There are many pressing and interesting issues.”
