Describing Ms. Anthousi’s appeal as “legitimate,” Mr. Ilias noted that if her appeal is accepted and the Supreme Court orders the Ministry of the Interior to recount the votes at that specific ballot box, “we will comply with the Court’s order and recount them.”

If the recount shows that there is no change in the final result announced for Nikitari, then things will remain as they are, he said. “If it turns out that a mistake was made at that particular polling station, the court will decide and tell us what to do,” he added.

At the same time, he pointed out that “we need to consider whether our electoral system is sound,” arguing that “we need to reexamine our electoral system, especially the issue of the second allocation.” At the same time, he noted that in the recent parliamentary elections, “a seat would change districts within five minutes, switched from one party to another, and ultimately resulted in someone being elected in the Paphos district with a very small number of voters,” describing the situation as “exhausting” for the candidates.

The Director General of the Ministry of the Interior also stated that the House of Representatives must review the electoral system “to make it fairer,” arguing that the system for electing its members “is flawed.”
