In a statement marking this somber anniversary, DISY notes that “fifty-two years later, the wounds of 1974 remain open. The occupation, the uprooting, the missing persons, and the division of our homeland continue to serve as a reminder of the heavy price of division, fanaticism, and political violence.”
The statement in its entirety
July 15 is one of the darkest chapters in the modern history of Cyprus. We honor the memory of those who fought to defend the Republic of Cyprus and unequivocally condemn the treacherous coup, which paved the way for the Turkish invasion and the ongoing occupation of our homeland.
Fifty-two years later, the wounds of 1974 remain open. The occupation, the uprooting, the missing persons, and the division of our homeland continue to remind us of the heavy price of division, fanaticism, and political violence. We do not forget the events that scarred our land, nor the lessons they taught us. Preserving our historical memory is a responsibility we all share.
We must safeguard democracy, strengthen unity, and reject any form of extremist behavior that undermines democratic institutions and social cohesion. Only through mutual respect, democratic dialogue, and national consensus can we address the challenges our country continues to face.
The Democratic Alarm remains steadfastly committed to the principles of democracy, the rule of law, and the European path of the Republic of Cyprus. With a sense of responsibility, we reaffirm our commitment to continuing the struggle, with unity and level-headedness, for a sustainable and workable solution to the Cyprus problem that will end the occupation, reunite our homeland, and ensure a peaceful and secure future for all Cypriots.
The memory of 1974 remains undimmed. It is a constant reminder of our responsibility to defend democracy, preserve national unity, and work consistently and resolutely toward the liberation and reunification of Cyprus.
