Today marks 52 full years since that dark morning of July 15, 1974, when the sirens sounded at 8:20 a.m., as yet another dramatic reminder of the “darkest” chapter in the modern history of the Republic of Cyprus.

In a message sent to citizens’ cell phones, the Municipality of Idali, south of Nicosia, stated:

“We would like to inform you that the sirens did not sound today in many parts of Cyprus due to a problem with the Civil Defense’s outdated system. Our municipality has expressed its strong dissatisfaction with Civil Defense regarding this incident.”

Speaking on the “Alpha News” program, Civil Defense Press Secretary Panagiotis Liasidis, when asked to comment on complaints from citizens from areas where the sirens did not sound, he stated:

“All preparations were made in accordance with established procedures. Certainly, some problems arose, and all cases will be examined. The system is being evaluated; a study is underway to replace it, and we are monitoring the situation—we will take appropriate measures. We will examine all cases and take appropriate action accordingly. A study is underway to proceed with a replacement, and we will certainly ensure better coverage of areas not currently covered by sirens.”
