U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he wants Israeli forces to withdraw from southern Lebanon, while suggesting that the new president of Syria, Ahmed al-Sarraa, to take charge of dealing with Hezbollah.
Donald Trump, in an interview with Fox News on Tuesday, said he wants to see Israel withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon, believing that this would help de-escalate tensions and allow the United States and Israel to focus on Iran.
“Withdraw. That’s another word for it. We have very good relations with Lebanon, and Israel is handling the situation very well,” he said.
“It would be good for him to leave. I think things will calm down a bit then, because we need to focus our energy on the big issue. And the big issue is Iran,” he added.
The U.S. president also suggested that Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, to take action against Hezbollah, noting that he could do so in a more targeted manner than Israel.
“He could take on Hezbollah and do it differently. He wouldn’t level buildings. “I hated seeing buildings collapse,” Trump said of al-Sarraa, who previously headed a Syrian organization linked to al-Qaeda.
Just last week, the United States removed Syria from the list of countries designated as state sponsors of terrorism, for the first time since 1979.
“Yes, I believe that would be more accurate. And I can tell you that I believe he would want to do it,” Trump concluded.
