The visit to Cyprus by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, just days before the end of his term and sixteen years after the last visit by a UN head, is expected to be announced by Nicosia in the coming days.
As reported by Alpha Cyprus political editor Giorgos Georgiadis on the “Alpha News” program, the most likely dates for Guterres’s visit to Cyprus are July 27 and 28, 2026.
According to reports, Mr. Guterres may be accompanied by his Personal Envoy for the Cyprus Issue, María Ángela Olguín, who has recently been holding meetings in Nicosia, Athens, Ankara, Brussels, London, and New York.
Political analysts suggest that Guterres is making the trip to provide a “psychological boost” to efforts to resume talks on a solution to the Cyprus problem, while they believe that the renewed process led by the Secretary-General is now at a critical juncture.
