The expansion of the Technical High School program from the two districts where it has been implemented to date— namely Nicosia and Limassol, to Paphos and Free Famagusta, was announced on Thursday by the Minister of Education, Sports, and Youth, Athina Michaelidou, on Thursday following a Cabinet meeting that approved the proposal.
Ms. Michaelidou said that the Technical High Schools will begin operating this coming September. “Today’s decision fulfills yet another important commitment by the Government and the President of the Republic himself to the continuous improvement of technical and vocational education, which is a key pillar of the modern educational system that meets the needs of both contemporary society and the labor market,” he said.
Our vision, he continued, for the creation of the Technical High School is proceeding as planned with very good results. She said that the evaluation of last school year’s pilot program allows us to move forward with its expansion. The successful pilot program, and the positive response from teachers and students show, the Minister said, that this is a reform that has been embraced by society and addresses a real educational and social need. “Today we are taking the next step; we are expanding the program, giving more children aged 12 and older the opportunity to become familiar with skills related to technical professions and new technologies, so that they can make better choices in the future,” she said.
Ms. Michailidou said that the Technical Gymnasium is now a reliable ambassador for educational reform, a tangible example that education is indeed changing. “This is a reform that has also been recognized at the EU level. Strengthening technical education remains our ongoing priority,” she emphasized.
