Trump's Statement: Election interference by China; it attempted to influence the 2020 election

Trump is directing his criticism at China, accusing it of interfering in the elections.

In the early hours of Friday (Cyprus time), Donald Trump delivered a statement from the White House regarding the 2020 elections and foreign influence on them.

This is an issue he has raised many times in the past, as he refuses to accept his defeat by Joe Biden.

U.S. President Donald Trump accused China of being involved in “the largest election data hack in history” and announced that he had ordered the declassification of classified documents from U.S. intelligence agencies that reveal “shocking vulnerabilities” in the U.S. electoral system.

At the beginning of his speech, he referred to the achievements of his presidency before emphasizing that “drastic action is needed to ensure that elections are fair,” while asserting that the system, as it stands today, is riddled with “shocking vulnerabilities.”

As proof, the White House will release declassified documents showing, among other things, that in 2020 China illegally obtained records of 220 million voters, nearly the entire U.S. electorate. “It was a nightmare for election security,” he explained.

This information includes names, addresses, phone numbers, political preferences, and other sensitive data that would be necessary for voter registration, he added, claiming that intelligence reports even indicate that China has assigned this new project to a special data mining unit. Furthermore, he said that Beijing had been working since 2018 to influence the 2020 elections.

“This evidence shows that our electoral system is dangerously vulnerable—and indeed is vulnerable to hacker attacks on a scale we never thought possible,” he explained.

One of the ways China exerted this influence was for Beijing to identify journalists who did not write favorably about President Trump and pay them to write more negatively.

“Every American has the right to know that, when they vote, their vote will be accurately counted in a system—and that means the system must be secure. A system in which fraud and interference are not merely difficult, but practically impossible. Unfortunately, the system we have today falls far short of this standard,” Trump said on the matter.

He further claimed that members of the “deep state” worked to conceal and downplay information regarding the extent of China’s threatening electoral interference. “By hiding it from both the president and the American people in a way that no one thought was possible, U.S. intelligence agencies began to learn about the breach of voter registration records in 2020,” Trump claimed.

He cited a wealth of evidence which, according to him, suggests that the U.S. electoral system is irreparably corrupt and dysfunctional, in order to support his claims that the 2020 election was “stolen” from him. He also claimed that the midterm elections, to be held this November, are “vulnerable to fraud and theft,” unless radical changes are made to the electoral system in a way that would make it much more difficult for voters to exercise their right to vote.

Among other things, he said that mail-in ballots are inherently “corrupt” and called for a near-total ban on this process.
