One of the most historic jerseys in world soccer has changed hands. The jersey worn by Pelé in the 1958 World Cup final in Sweden —Brazil’s first title—was sold at auction in New York for $4.9 million, according to Sotheby’s.
Pelé, then 17, had scored two goals in the “Seleção’s” 5-2 victory, in a final that would mark the beginning of his reign in world soccer. Pelé himself had given the jersey to his teammate and close friend Dida, remaining in his family for decades before ending up in a museum and later being put up for auction for the first time in 2004.
In this year’s auction, the jersey attracted ten bids from five different bidders, with the final buyer remaining anonymous. With a price of $4.9 million, it is now the second most expensive soccer jersey ever sold.
The record remains in the hands of Diego Maradona: The jersey he wore in the historic match against England in 1986 (“Hand of God” and “Goal of the Century”) had reached $9.3 million.
