Orbelín Pineda is set to continue his career at Matías Almeida’s Monterrey, as all signs indicate, since AEK has agreed to a deal worth 8 million euros.

Given the 30-year-old midfielder’s desire to return to his homeland, Mexico, for family reasons, the yellow-and-black club decided to accommodate Monterrey by ultimately agreeing to accept payment not in full, as stipulated in his contract, but with a 50% down payment (4 million euros) and repayment of the remaining amount within one year.

The matter may even be finalized within the day. The Mexicans report that Pineda will undergo medical exams in the city of Querétaro, sign a three-year contract (with an annual salary of approximately 3 million euros), and by Monday he will be joining the team’s preseason training. It should be noted that this coming Sunday (July 19) marks the start of the Apertura tournament in Mexico, and Matías Almeida’s team obviously wants to finalize Pineda’s transfer as quickly as possible.

All signs point to the Mexican star leaving AEK after four years, during which he celebrated two league titles (in both of which he was named the Stoiximan Super League’s top player) and one Cup title, with 174 appearances, 20 goals, and 17 assists. AEK will now look to the transfer market for Pineda’s replacement.
