An end of an era for Andreas Makris at AEL.
The Limassol-based club announced the mutually agreed-upon termination of its contract with the Cypriot forward, who is leaving after a total of five years with the team.
The 30-year-old soccer player had been with the “Lions” since the summer of 2022, and had also played for another season, the 2018–19 campaign, during which he celebrated winning the Coca-Cola Cup.
In total, while wearing the AEL jersey, Makris made 150 appearances, scoring 29 goals and providing 10 assists.
The official announcement reads as follows:
“AEL FC LTD announces the mutually agreed-upon termination of its contract with soccer player Andreas Makris.
Andreas served AEL with dedication, professionalism, and selflessness, standing out as one of the players who consistently and proudly honored the blue-and-yellow jersey. As one of our team’s captains, he was a role model both on and off the field, consistently representing the Limassol Athletic Union with dignity, ethos, and a strong sense of responsibility.
His contribution on the field has been decisive. With more than 100 official appearances wearing the AEL crest on his chest, he made an immense contribution during difficult and demanding periods for our team, always giving his best and setting an example of fighting spirit, consistency, and dedication. At the same time, he had the honor of celebrating AEL’s victory in the 2019 Cyprus Cup, adding his name to the list of achievements in our club’s modern history.
But beyond his on-field contributions, Andreas stood out for his personality and character. His respect for the sport, his opponents, his teammates, and the referees, as well as his exemplary conduct, were recognized in the most official way when the Cyprus Football Association awarded him the special “Fair Captain” award for the 2024–2025 season. This distinction, which was awarded following a vote by the referees, is the highest affirmation of the integrity, dignity, and respect that have consistently characterized his presence on Cypriot soccer fields.
His presence and contributions to AEL have left their own unique mark on the club’s history. Above all, however, he departs having earned the respect and appreciation of all those who worked with him and all those who were fortunate enough to watch him play in our team’s colors.
We express our sincere thanks to Andreas Makris for everything he has contributed to AEL and wish him every success in his future soccer career and personal life.
“Andreas, thank you for everything.”
