Early this morning, the police arrested a 29-year-old man to facilitate the investigation into a case of illegal drug possession with the intent to supply another person. This case involves the seizure of more than three kilograms of cannabis by the Drug Enforcement Agency (YKAN) in February 2024. Three other individuals had been arrested in connection with the same case and are currently serving prison sentences.
The 29-year-old was located in Romania, where he was arrested by the Romanian police pursuant to a European Arrest Warrant. After the required procedures were completed, he was extradited to Cyprus, where he arrived early this morning and was arrested pursuant to a court warrant.
This morning, he was brought before the Larnaca District Court, which issued a six-day detention order against him.
The investigation into the case began on February 1, 2024, when members of the Drug Enforcement Agency (YKAN) stopped a vehicle for inspection in Larnaca in a dramatic manner. A quantity of cannabis, with a total weight of three kilograms and 220 grams, was found and seized inside the vehicle. Three other individuals, aged 28, 40, and 51, were arrested in connection with the case and are currently serving prison sentences of 5½, 4, and 7 years, respectively.
The YKAN (Larnaca District Unit) is investigating the case.
