Sakkari dominated the first set, which she won by a commanding 6-1, while in the second set, although she faced significantly more challenges and saw her opponent pushing her to even the score, she ultimately found a way to close it out 7-5 and secure the important victory!
Now, Sakkari awaits her opponent in Sunday’s final, who will emerge from the match between Towson and Krejcikova.
The semifinal began with Korneeva giving Sakkari a tough time, but Sakkari managed to hold her serve and take the first game, while the Russian tied the score at 1-1. However, Sakkari then found her rhythm and, after taking a 2-1 lead, secured the first break of the match to go up 3-1. Completely dominant, the Greek tennis player won the next two games as well, reaching 6-1 with 8 winners and 28 points won, compared to her opponent’s 14!
In the second set, Korneeva played more competitively and took a 1-0 and then a 2-1 lead, with Sakkari responding and capitalizing on her serve to tie the score at 2-2. Two consecutive breaks followed, with Korneeva taking the lead again at 4-3, but Sakkari found her rhythm once more and, after tying the score at 4-4, she broke serve again to take the lead and ultimately reached 7-5 to win the set 2-0 and advance to the final!
