A serious traffic accident occurred early Sunday morning on Mournion Avenue in Chania, when an EKAB ambulance, which was transporting a patient to Chania Hospital, collided with a passenger car under circumstances that are currently under investigation.
According to what the director of Chania Hospital, Giorgos Beas, told Cretalive, the patient who was in the ambulance died of cardiac arrest. The exact circumstances of his death are expected to be clarified through the standard investigative process.
Both members of the ambulance crew were injured in the violent collision. One paramedic is in a state of shock, while the other suffered a chest injury and is being hospitalized as a precaution.
The driver of the passenger car involved in the accident is a nurse at Chania Hospital and was leaving her night shift at the time of the accident.
The collision was particularly violent, causing the ambulance to overturn. Fire department personnel rushed to the scene with three vehicles to assist in extricating the occupants.
The Chania Traffic Police Department is conducting a preliminary investigation to determine the exact causes and circumstances of the accident.
