A fire that broke out on Thursday about 100 kilometers north of Madrid spread, reducing more than 120,000 stremmata to ashes and forcing hundreds of people to flee their homes, local authorities announced today.

The wildfire, which is raging in the Guadalajara region and primarily in the Sierra Norte Natural Park, has not caused any casualties so far, but continues to be described “difficult” by the president of the Castile-La Mancha region, Emiliano García-Pache, and local authorities on the X platform.

Approximately 350 firefighters and soldiers from the UME (military emergency unit) have been deployed to the area, supported by 25 aircraft, in an effort to bring the fire under control, the control center told the press.

The fire broke out in a forested and mountainous area that is home to endangered species of eagles, wolves, and butterflies.

This fire comes on top of another one that is “still far from being brought under control,” which broke out on Wednesday near Zaragoza, in the northeast, and has burned nearly 160,000 stremmata according to the latest report announced yesterday, Saturday evening, by Roberto Bermúdez de Castro, the official in charge of security matters for the regional government of Aragon.

No casualties have been reported so far from this fire either.

Spain has just experienced one of the deadliest wildfires in its recent history, with the forest fire that broke out in Andalusia (in the south) on July 9, killing 13 people and burning 70,000 stremmata.

On the front lines of global warming, the country has been experiencing increasingly severe and frequent heat waves in recent years, with temperatures frequently exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, creating conditions conducive to catastrophic wildfires.

In 2025, more than 3,930,000 stremmata were reduced to ashes by fires, according to the European Forest Fire Information System (Effis), marking the worst toll in Spain’s recent history.

Nearly 820,000 stremmata have been reduced to ashes since the beginning of the year in the country, according to Effis.
