The large fire that broke out at 2:30 p.m. in the Evkali area of the Pyrgos community in Larnaca has been brought under full control following a coordinated and difficult 90-minute battle.
According to the latest update from the Forestry Department, the fire was brought under complete control at 4:00 p.m., after burning an area of 10 hectares of pine trees, low wild vegetation, reed beds, and brush.
Forty personnel from the Forestry Department participated in the firefighting operation, utilizing 12 fire trucks, 2 earthmovers, and 2 water tankers. Also participating were 10 members of the Fire Department with 4 fire trucks, as well as volunteers. Five aircraft from the Republic also assisted in the firefighting operations.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
As the Forestry Department had reported earlier, the fire also affected residential yards that had not been cleared of weeds and wild vegetation.
Although the flames threatened homes, the timely mobilization of ground and aerial forces prevented the fire from spreading, and the situation is now partially under control.
