The operation to extinguish the major fire in the community of Pyrgoi was completed without any injuries or damage to homes, according to a statement from the Community Council, which thanked all the emergency services and volunteers who helped fight the blaze.
The major fire that broke out in the community has now been extinguished, the Pyrgos Community Council stated in a press release.
The Community Council notes that “thanks to the immediate and coordinated response of the Forestry Department and all relevant agencies, there were no injuries or damage to homes.”
The Community Council expresses “heartfelt thanks to the Forestry Department for its immediate response, to the aircraft that arrived in a timely manner and played a decisive role in extinguishing the fire, to the Fire Department, as well as to all the volunteers and everyone who assisted in the operation.”
“Unfortunately, the fire left behind charred pine trees and centuries-old olive trees. However, the most important thing is that human lives and property were protected.”
He noted that “as a precaution, Forest Service personnel will remain in the area throughout the night, conducting continuous checks to ensure that the fire does not reignite.”
“We warmly thank everyone who contributed to this joint effort and demonstrated, once again, the power of cooperation,” the Pyrgos Community Council concludes in its announcement.

It should be noted that the fire was brought under complete control after a coordinated and difficult 90-minute battle; it had broken out around 2:30 p.m. in the Evkali area. It burned a total area of 10 hectares of pine trees, low wild vegetation, reed beds, and brush.
Forty personnel from the Forestry Department participated in the firefighting operation, utilizing 12 fire trucks, 2 earthmovers, and 2 water tankers. Also participating were 10 members of the Fire Department with 4 fire trucks, as well as volunteers. Five aircraft from the Republic also assisted in the firefighting operations. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The fire also affected residential yards that had not been cleared of weeds and wild vegetation.
Although the flames threatened homes, the timely mobilization of ground and aerial forces prevented the fire from spreading, and the situation is now fully under control.
