Spain won its second World Cup title, making history in the annals of the World Cup.
Luis de la Fuente’s team became the first world champion to complete a World Cup final tournament having conceded just one goal throughout the entire tournament!
The only goal to find the back of Unai Simón’s net came in the quarterfinal against Belgium, when Charles de Ketelaere scored, with Spain ultimately prevailing 2-1 thanks to Merino’s goal in the closing minutes.
Overall, La Roja finished the tournament with seven wins and one draw. They started with a 0-0 draw against Cape Verde and then went on to win seven consecutive matches against Saudi Arabia (4-0), Uruguay (1-0), Austria (3-0), Portugal (1-0), Belgium (2-1), France (2-0), and Argentina (1-0 in the final).
At the same time, Unai Simón also broke the record for consecutive minutes without conceding a goal in a World Cup final tournament, reaching 650 minutes, including his appearances at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Of course, the four defenders were worthy partners, with Kubarsi and Laporte having a fantastic tournament, as well as Koukoureya and Porro, both of whom also contributed on the offensive end with goals and assists!
