Dimitriou-Stylios: They reaffirmed the common position of Cyprus and Greece on the Cyprus issue

The importance of Greece and Cyprus standing together, particularly at this juncture regarding the Cyprus issue and in light of the upcoming visit of the United Nations Secretary-General to Cyprus, were highlighted on Monday by Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament Annita Dimitriou and Georgios Stylos, Chair of the Hellenic Parliament’s Committee on Social Affairs.

According to a statement from the Hellenic Parliament, Ms. Dimitriou received Mr. Stylos, a Member of Parliament from Arta, who is visiting Cyprus to represent the Hellenic Parliament at the commemorative events marking the tragic anniversaries of 1974.

During the meeting, the Speaker of the House thanked Mr. Stylios for his presence in Cyprus on a day of particular significance for the Greek community in Cyprus, emphasizing that Greece is Cyprus’s strongest brotherly ally.

Ms. Dimitriou stressed the importance of Greek-Cypriot solidarity, particularly at this critical juncture regarding the Cyprus issue and in light of the upcoming visit of the UN Secretary-General to Cyprus.

She also noted that the Greek Cypriot side is ready to resume substantive negotiations from the point where they were suspended at Crans-Montana, with the aim of achieving a fair and sustainable solution, in accordance with international law, the relevant United Nations resolutions, and European principles and values.

For his part, Mr. Stylianos expressed his emotion at being in Cyprus during the days commemorating the 1974 Turkish invasion.

He underscored the steadfast solidarity between Greece and Cyprus, emphasizing that support for the Republic of Cyprus remains a constant national priority.

He also expressed the hope that the upcoming visit of the UN Secretary-General to Cyprus will contribute positively to efforts to resume the negotiation process and leave a meaningful mark for the benefit of the Republic of Cyprus Republic and the prospect of resolving the Cyprus problem.

During the meeting, views were also exchanged on important legislative issues of concern to the Parliaments of Cyprus and Greece, as well as on the common challenges facing modern democracies, particularly with regard to the defense of institutions and the rule of law.
