An alarm was triggered on the morning of Tuesday, July 21, at the southern entrance to the Acropolis archaeological site, across from the Acropolis Museum and the ticket offices, following a report of a man wielding a knife and threatening passersby.
A passerby notified the Emergency Response Center of the incident. When police arrived on the scene, they found that the man had already unprovokedly attacked two tourists from the U.S., causing minor injuries to their hands. The two tourists were a man and a woman.
A rapid-response motorcycle unit and an EKAB ambulance rushed to the scene to provide first aid to the injured.
Shortly thereafter, the perpetrator was subdued and arrested by officers from the Athens Police Department.
