According to the announcement, during his visit, the Minister met with prison management and was briefed on issues concerning the department’s operations, staffing, working conditions, and issues of concern to the staff, given the overcrowding and the age of the buildings.

“He then visited Wing 4, where inmates serving long sentences are held and where a fire had broken out on the evening of July 19, 2026,” the report states. It is noted that the damage has been fully repaired and the wing is now operating normally.

Mr. Fytiris also requested a meeting with the leaders of the prison guards’ union organizations, the report adds. “He met with the President and Secretary of the PASYDY Prison Guards Branch, with whom he discussed issues of concern to the staff and listened to their positions and suggestions,” according to the announcement.
