"There is increased readiness and coordination within the limits of our capabilities," Fire Department spokesperson Andreas Kettis, told CNA regarding the meeting held Tuesday morning on issues of prevention, monitoring, and coordination in fire suppression, in light of the high temperatures.

When asked by CNA about the results of the meeting, Mr. Kettis noted that the meeting took place within the framework of the Chief Fire Officer’s role as fire coordinator. He said that officials from the Fire Service in all districts participated, and that key law enforcement agencies were also invited.

The purpose, he said, was—given the forecast for high temperatures and strong winds in the coming days— “to redefine our strategy and reevaluate our objectives regarding both prevention and surveillance, as well as coordination of suppression efforts.”

When asked, he said that representatives from the Forestry Department, the Game and Wildlife Service, Civil Defense, the National Guard, and the Police participated. “These were all front-line agencies, not support units,” he added.

Mr. Kettis pointed out that preparations are being made within the limits of available resources, but that some fires, when they exceed the capabilities of the services, are not as easy to manage, as is also the case abroad, referring to recent fires in Spain, Portugal, and Canada.

“We do everything we can to prevent incidents and try our best to manage them if something does happen,” he added, noting that it is not easy to predict how a fire will develop.

When asked about the high temperatures this season, Mr. Kettis emphasized the need for everyone to be on high alert and prepared, and to limit activities that could cause a fire. “We aren’t doing anything right now—not even the slightest thing—because a fire can be started very easily,” he added.

He also urged the public to immediately notify emergency services if they spot a fire.

He further stated that, whenever there is a suspicion or any activity is deemed suspicious, “even if someone is merely engaging in an activity out of negligence, we should also notify the authorities.”

He noted that the Fire Department is on high alert, conducting patrols and remaining on standby, as are the observation posts and field stations.

“We are all coordinated on this. But you understand that the public’s help is very important,” he concluded.
