The investigation into the death of criminal defense attorney Stavros Georgiou, who was found dead in his office in central Athens, late Tuesday night (July 22).

According to the information available so far, the medical examiner did not find any injuries consistent with the use of a knife or a firearm. Instead, the evidence suggests that the lawyer was violently attacked with punches and kicks, mainly to the head, which is where the bleeding originated. Authorities are investigating the possibility that the unfortunate man may even have been struck against furniture in the room.

Reports also indicate that the lawyer had shown no signs of life for several hours, a fact that caused his family great concern. His 16-year-old twin daughters tried to reach him by phone, but he did not answer their calls.

As the hours passed without any word from him, the girls went to his office, where they rang the doorbell persistently but received no answer. A resident of the apartment building heard their shouts and alerted the doorman. The doorman opened the door, revealing the tragic outcome.

There were no signs of forced entry

Stavros Georgiou was found dead inside his office. According to initial reports, his body was found naked, in a fetal position, while there were traces of blood in the room and his clothes were scattered about. At the same time, no obvious signs of forced entry were found at the office entrance.

Shortly afterward, the victim’s brother arrived at the scene, visibly shaken, and asked the police officers if he could go up to the office to see his brother. Speaking to reporters, he said that he, too, had been looking for him since noon that same day, but had been unable to reach him.

The area was cordoned off by a large police presence, and a medical examiner was called to the scene.
