In a direct trial before the Larnaca Permanent Criminal Court, which is scheduled to convene on October 14, the Larnaca District Court has referred the five defendants to stand trial on terrorism-related charges.
The five defendants, aged 33, 38, 54, 32, and 41 years old, appeared again today before the Larnaca District Court in a hearing held behind closed doors.
The court decided to refer them directly to trial before the Larnaca Permanent Criminal Court, which will convene on October 14. Until then, the five defendants will remain in custody. The defense attorney for the third defendant (54 years old) objected to his client’s continued detention. The court rejected the request and ruled that the five defendants must remain in custody.
The defendants face a total of fifteen charges, including conspiracy to commit a felony, conspiracy to commit murder, participation in a criminal organization, terrorism-related offenses, providing support to a terrorist organization, and money laundering.
According to the indictment, authorities are investigating allegations of links to a terrorist organization and actions that, according to the prosecution, targeted Israeli interests in the Republic of Cyprus.
It should be noted that a fifth defendant was added to the case in mid-July.
He is a 41-year-old third-country national who was located in an Asian country and transferred to Cyprus following a coordinated operation by the authorities. Investigators are examining, among other things, the role he is alleged to have played in the case, as well as possible connections and contacts that are at the center of the investigations.
These allegations are part of the criminal proceedings and have not been adjudicated by a court.
