The Minister of Defense has received the findings of the disciplinary investigation conducted by the National Guard regarding the fire at the Kalo Chorio Firing Range on July 27, 2026, and it is expected to be submitted to the Legal Service within the next week.
As Mr. Palmas stated in a written statement, he received the findings today from the Commander of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Emmanouil Theodorou, and as he notes, “at this stage, I will limit myself to a thorough review of the findings and will not make any further comments, as the criminal investigation of the case by the Cyprus Police is ongoing.”
As the Minister adds, “Respect for due process, as well as the need to ensure the integrity of the criminal investigation, preclude public statements on matters that are the subject of the investigation.”
Upon completion of the criminal investigation and evaluation of all the evidence, where liability is established, it will be assigned in accordance with the law, he added, while the findings of the police’s criminal investigation are expected to be submitted to the Legal Service within the coming week.

It should be noted that, according to information from Alpha, disciplinary liability extends to a number of National Guard officers, even at higher ranks, for both the outbreak and the spread of the fire.
The investigation focused on the 70th Engineer Battalion, which carried out the controlled destruction of six RPG anti-tank warheads, in the presence of three U.S. military personnel. The exercise was part of the battalion’s certification process to demonstrate its ability to destroy specific ammunition using a predetermined method.
