Sir Stelios Hatzioannou and his family have expressed their support for the proposed acquisition of easyJet by Apollo, as announced by easyJet’s Board of Directors.
In a written statement, Sir Stelios Hatzioannou states that he and his family will remain “shareholders in the private company that will be formed following easyJet’s delisting from the London Stock Exchange.”
“I welcome Apollo’s strategic intentions for easyJet, which aim to create new growth prospects for the company,” he adds.
He also notes that “the fact that Apollo, one of the world’s most powerful and experienced institutional investors, has decided to support and invest in the growth of easyJet, the flagship member of the easy family of brands, is a strong endorsement of the value of the easy brand and the strength of easyGroup Ltd’s business model.”
“My family and I intend to maintain our position as significant long-term shareholders of easyJet, supporting the next chapter in the company’s journey,” he adds.
Sir Stelios Hatzioannou notes that the journey to create the easy family of brands began in 1994, when, at the age of 27, he launched easyJet, the first of the easy family of brands.
“In 2000, I took easyJet plc public on the London Stock Exchange, in order to secure funding for the expansion of the company’s fleet, which has grown from 19 aircraft at that time to approximately 356 today,” he adds.
According to Mr. Hatzioannou, during the same period he made the strategic decision to retain ownership of the easyJet brand through his private company, easyGroup Ltd.
“Ownership of the easy family of brands has provided me with a steady stream of revenue over the past 26 years, which I can now use to fund the charitable work of the Stelios Hatzioannou Charitable Foundation,” he concludes.
