The murder of 26-year-old Nilda Müge Şahin in the early hours of Thursday in Istanbul has sent shockwaves through Turkey; she was shot by her ex-boyfriend, 35-year-old Nazir Ilgin, while she was waiting outside a pharmacy for her sister, who had gone inside to buy medicine after they had returned from the hospital.
As seen in the security camera footage, Sahin is waiting on a motorcycle when Ilgin approaches her and shoots her at point-blank range.
Although the 26-year-old was taken to a hospital, doctors were unable to save her life.
As revealed after the murder, Şahin had gone to the police just nine days before her murder, reporting that she was receiving threats from her ex-partner. A restraining order had been issued against him, and although he was arrested and brought to court, he was released on probation.
Sahine and Ilgin had been in a relationship for about a year and had broken up four months earlier; authorities believe that the 35-year-old man did not accept the breakup and had been systematically threateninghis ex-partner for a long time.
Turkish media also report that Ilgin had attacked a nurse with a knife in 2021, was sentenced to 14 years in prison, but was released on parole after serving part of his sentence.
