The soccer federations of Argentina and Mexico publicly expressed their support for Gianni Infantino’s reelection as FIFA president, even as he has lost the confidence of most European federations, including the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO).
The FIFA president and Secretary General Mattias Grafström published a letter on Wednesday in which they apologized for their plan to open up the global governing body to private investors.
“We express our support for the leadership exercised over the past 10 years, which has been centered on the development of soccer worldwide and institutional stability based on a clear, consistent, and transparent governance model,” the Argentine Football Association states in a letter, adding: “We must acknowledge the Executive Committee’s decision to withdraw a project that, within the soccer family and from its very inception, has caused far more uncertainty than certainty. Therefore, it is worth noting the acknowledgment of the mistakes made during this process and the apology expressed in the heartfelt message sent to FIFA’s 211 member associations. Prioritizing governance standards is a fundamental pillar for strengthening good relations between FIFA, its member associations, and the confederations. You lead an administration that has brought about a profound transformation at FIFA, opening the organization’s doors to all member associations and confederations, so that, through honest and direct dialogue, we can all continue to promote soccer at all levels and in all categories. Our federation firmly believes and reaffirms that the way forward is to continue working under your leadership, with the aim of continuing to develop a better and even more inclusive soccer.
