The 55-year-old man in Mystras was sentenced to 11 months, suspended: “My motives weren’t financial; I needed to keep him intact.”

He faces only one charge: making a false statement

The 55-year-old man, who had hidden the body of his elderly father in a freezer at a guesthouse in the Mystras area, was sentenced to 11 months in prison, suspended for three years. The Sparta Misdemeanor Court heard only the charge of making a false statement, which pertained to the false information the 55-year-old had given to police regarding his father’s whereabouts.

Despite the prosecutor’s recommendation that the sentence be enforced, the court accepted the defense attorney’s motion and decided to suspend the sentence for three years, resulting in the 55-year-old being released after the proceedings concluded. In contrast, the case involving repeated fraud was not heard, as the exact amount of the alleged fraud remains unclear.

A key factor is the exact time of the elderly man’s death, as this will determine the period during which the collection of his pension benefits is alleged to have continued after his death. To date, the forensic medical examination to determine the time of death has not been completed, preventing the court from addressing the merits of this specific charge.

The investigation into the case, therefore, continues, and the alleged fraud will be adjudicated at a later date, once the necessary evidence has been gathered.

“I had no financial motive”

During his testimony before the court, he maintained that his decision to keep his father’s remains in the freezer was not financially motivated, but was due to his inability to cope with his loss.

“I felt the need to keep my father intact, as he was the last person I had left in my life, and that is why I put him in the freezer,” he stated. The judicial authorities, however, are examining all the evidence in the case, including the continued payment of the elderly man’s pension after his death.

The case came to light following a police investigation, which revealed that the elderly man had been missing for a long time.

However, authorities soon tracked down the 55-year-old and arrested him after his father’s body was found in the freezer of the closed hotel. Before the body was found, the man had claimed that his father was in Athens, a claim refuted by the defendant’s sister, who lives in Athens.
