“I lost both my wife and my son. They were on their way to work; I don’t know what happened—I’ve lost everything”: With these words, the husband of the 43-year-old woman and father of the 21-year-old man described to ERT the unimaginable loss he is experiencing following the car accident that occurred on Friday morning on the Amphipolis–Drama road, near Paleokomi, Serres.
In a matter of seconds, the man lost his wife and son, who had left their home early that morning to go to work.
The 43-year-old woman and the 21-year-old man were riding in the same car, with the young man in the driver’s seat and his mother in the passenger seat. At approximately 7:30 a.m., the car collided head-on with a truck, resulting in the immediate deaths of the mother and son.
The exact circumstances of the accident are being investigated by the relevant authorities.
What the truck driver says
The 56-year-old truck driver gave his own account of the moments leading up to the fatal collision.
Speaking to Mega, he claimed that he was driving normally in his lane at a speed of about 75–80 km/h, when he suddenly saw the car carrying a mother and her son lose control and veer into oncoming traffic.
“I was driving normally in my lane, at 75 to 80 kilometers per hour—because that’s the speed limit there; you can’t go any faster—and suddenly a car comes toward me; it had lost control coming from the upper side, from Little Souli,” he said.
As he explained, he tried to swerve to the left to avoid the collision, but was unable to do so: “It had lost control, veered into oncoming traffic toward me, the driver was trying to turn the wheel, and I was trying to swerve left to get out of the way, but I couldn’t get out of the way in time, and he crashed into me, and that’s what happened,” he added.
Mother and son were on their way to work
The family, originally from Albania, lived permanently in Palaiokomi. The 43-year-old woman and her 21-year-old son worked at the same company based in Ofrinio Beach, and on Friday morning they were on their way to work.
They leave behind the husband and father, as well as the family’s daughter, who are now faced with the sudden loss of two loved ones.
The truck driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to the General Hospital of Drama, while police officers, two fire department vehicles, and EKAB crews.
Investigations to determine the exact causes and circumstances under which the head-on collision occurred are ongoing.
