A second criminal investigation has been launched against journalist Makarios Drousiotis, two months after the Anti-Corruption Authority submitted its findings regarding the book *State Mafia*. This investigation concerns a personal data case, as he himself states in a post on X.
“The masks have come off. After I was indicted in criminal court on charges of spreading false news regarding the ‘Santi’ case, the police opened a second criminal case against me concerning *State Mafia*.”
According to his account, four years after the book’s publication—and just two months after the Anti-Corruption Authority submitted its findings—they are investigating a case involving personal data.
“The Headquarters Criminal Investigation Division—the very same department that ‘investigated’ the Santis case—even requested statements from the printer who printed the book, the editor, and the designer! This is an attempt to intimidate my colleagues,” he continues.
“The tolerance shown by the political world and the journalistic community toward the criminalization of investigative journalism has emboldened the corrupt system of power, which has gone so far as to conduct criminal investigations into books,” he added.
He went on to say, “We are now living in dark times. Every democratically minded citizen must react, and the journalistic community must take a stand. This is not an issue that concerns only me personally; it concerns society as a whole; it concerns freedom of expression, transparency, accountability, and the rule of law—which is an endangered species in Cyprus today.”
