On Saturday morning, the Paphos District Court issued a six-day detention order against the 51-year-old monk from the Monastery of Saint Neophytos in connection with the attempted murder being investigated against him following the attack with a sharp object.
According to the head of the Paphos CID, Michalis Nikolaou, the attack was allegedly carried out with a paper cutter.
It is recalled that the Ecclesiastical Committee went to the monastery to inform the 51-year-old monk that he had to leave the monastery and vacate his cell.
The 51-year-old refused and allegedly attacked a 53-year-old man—a technician at the monastery—with a knife-like object, injuring him in the neck and arm.
A 27-year-old monk intervened during the incident, attempting to stop the 51-year-old, but he was also attacked and injured in the arm with a sharp object.
Authorities proceeded to arrest the 51-year-old as part of an investigation into attempted murder, acts intended to cause serious bodily harm, injury, stabbing, as well as the illegal possession and carrying of an offensive weapon.
The 53-year-old was taken to Paphos General Hospital, where his wounds were sutured, and he was admitted for treatment. The 27-year-old was also taken to the hospital, where he received first aid and was discharged.
