The Deputy Chairman and Acting Chairman of EDEK, Morphakis Solomonides, states in a written statement that he is consciously taking the decision to ratify all candidacies for the September 5 elections.
“I understand the weight of such a decision, but I would not allow myself to leave our party at the mercy of a deliberately provoked tension. My hope—and I will work hard to achieve this—is that we will head into the elections in a spirit of dialogue rather than insults and baseless allegations,” he stated, among other things.
At the same time, he called on everyone to avoid public name-calling so that the elections can take place in a spirit of dialogue rather than baseless allegations.
The announcement in its entirety
With the sole aim of serving the best interests of EDEK
With the aim of ensuring a smooth process leading up to the election for the position of EDEK President
Following the decision of the Congress Credentials Committee to request that the Political Bureau review and approve the candidacies in accordance with Article 38 of the Statutes, I have decided the following:
• I fully and consciously accept the political decision to ratify the candidacies of all four male candidates and one female candidate.
• I am initiating all necessary procedures for the elections to be held on September 5, 2026.
I understand the weight of such a decision.
But I would not allow myself to leave our party at the mercy of deliberately provoked tension.
My hope—and I will work hard to achieve this—is that we will head into the elections in a spirit of dialogue rather than insults and baseless allegations.
I call on everyone to avoid public name-calling and baseless accusations.
Otherwise, they will be held accountable by the thousands of EDEK members who want unity, but also want to hear positions and proposals—not insults.
EDEK is a democratic party, and in a democracy, there are no dead ends.
Democracy will have its say on September 5.
