On August 5, 2026, Customs Department officials working at the Postal Parcel Exchange at Larnaca Airport conducted a physical inspection of a package originating from the U.S., which had been selected by the Customs Risk Management System and was declared to contain 3 packages of children’s toys (cards featuring a well-known animated series) with a total weight of 4.2 kilograms.
During the inspection of the package in the presence of a postal clerk, the three packages were located, which, however, instead of the declared contents of children’s cards, were found to contain a total of 48 vaping devices (vapes) of various flavors (16 devices in each package), which were declared to contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) at a concentration of 89% – 1,517.65 mg per package and cannabidiol (CBD) at a concentration of 7.49% – 3.21 mg per package, resulting in a total percentage of active cannabinoids (TAC – Total Active Cannabinoids) of 96.49%.

The Drug Enforcement Agency was immediately notified, and its officers proceeded to the checkpoint. The package and its contents were seized by the Customs Department and handed over to members of the Drug Enforcement Agency, who, following the issuance of a relevant warrant, proceeded on Friday morning to arrest an individual in the Nicosia district who is alleged to be the recipient of the package. The NARC’s Nicosia Unit is continuing its investigation into the case.
