APOEL’s press officer, Nektarios Petevinos, referred in a post to the presentation of the 10 different emblems of the “blue-and-yellows” throughout history, as well as the same number of active sports programs the club currently maintains.
He highlighted the different circumstances of each era and the difficulties that existed in the past, even regarding the production and placement of the crest on the jerseys. At the same time, he emphasized the importance of highlighting all the teams and the people who serve them, many of whom compete and volunteer without receiving the recognition they deserve.
In detail: “The discovery and first-ever presentation of the 10 different versions of APOEL’s shield highlights, even in its symbols, just how much the era and their capabilities in shaping a team’s history. In times when the emblem was cut by hand, the outline was trimmed with scissors, and often a crooked cut would result. And when the crest would fade—which happened from time to time—you’d end up finishing the season without it on your jersey. Things we now take for granted were, for decades on end, often difficult or even impossible. The event unveiling APOEL’s anniversary logo had two purposes. To showcase for the first time all the variations of the APOEL emblem that have been worn in official appearances, culminating in the anniversary logo, and at the same time to introduce the public to all of APOEL’s sports teams. Many people may not even have known these sports existed, but after Thursday night, they’re now aware of them. APOEL currently has 10 active sports, which are divided into even more teams. APOEL’s sports are
1. BOWLING
2. BOXING
3. TABLE TENNIS
4. HANDBALL
5. SWIMMING
6. TRACK AND FIELD
7. CYCLING
8. VOLLEYBALL
9. BASKETBALL
10. SOCCER
All of these sports are divided into divisions, often into women’s and men’s divisions. They are also divided into different forms (divisions) of the same sports. For example, in handball, we have beach handball and indoor handball. In cycling, we have road cycling and mountain biking. Or in swimming, we have competitive swimming and water polo. Or in soccer, where we have outdoor soccer, indoor soccer, women’s soccer, and e-soccer. I understand that most people are only familiar with the most popular sports or the most popular teams. But let’s not forget about all the others. Because in these sports, too, there are proud people competing who wear the team’s colors, and no one gives them the recognition they deserve. And most of them devote their own money and time as volunteer athletes, knowing that most of the time, most people won’t even know they exist. I’m glad that all sports were represented at the event for the emblem. I wish there had been time to include all the departments as well, which number more than twice as many as the sports.”
