The “united front” against Gianni Infantino is growing, as UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and CONCACAF, which governs soccer in the Caribbean, North and Central America, and the Caribbean, issued a joint statement on Monday criticizing the FIFA president.
The reason was his intention to sell a stake in the World Cup’s commercial rights to private investors, a move he pushed forward without the confederations’ permission but was forced to reverse following the intense backlash it provoked.
The letter is signed by the presidents of the three confederations—Alexander Čeferin, Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, and Victor Montagliani, who are now calling for a fully independent investigation into the matter.
“Leadership in soccer is not about possession. It is not about holding—or demanding—power. When trust is betrayed through deception, when an individual places himself above the collective that entrusted him with authority, that duty has been abandoned,” the three confederations state. “The strength of soccer has always been its unity. We call for this unity to be preserved now, for leadership that serves soccer and does not merely seek to administer it,” they conclude.
