Firefighters continue to monitor the area around the landfill in Agia Varvara, Paphos, one day after a fire broke out there.
Thick smoke continues to rise from the fenced-off landfill site, although according to a statement from the Fire Department’s Press Office, no new fire has broken out.
The smoke observed is coming from the spot where yesterday’s fire broke out, which was brought under control following the immediate mobilization of firefighting forces.
Fire trucks remain in the area, patrolling and monitoring the site, while an excavator is carrying out backfilling work. The goal is to completely cover any potential hot spots that may still be burning inside the site.
The fire broke out yesterday, Sunday, August 9, at 1:59 p.m., in a fenced-off area of the landfill. According to the Fire Department, the fire consumed inert materials, while firefighters battled to prevent it from spreading beyond the site’s perimeter fence.
The prompt intervention of the firefighting crews contained the fire front, and after the fire was brought under control, water was continued to be sprayed to extinguish any remaining hot spots.
It should be noted that fires at waste disposal sites can continue to smolder internally for several days, even after the surface flames have been extinguished. For this reason, the area remains under close surveillance until it is ensured that there is no risk of the fire reigniting. The causes of yesterday’s fire are expected to be investigated.
