“ALMA Inspired Me”: How Litsa Drousiotou Decided to Switch from Dentistry to Politics

Her Refugee Experience and Her Goals as a Member of Parliament
ALPHANEWSLIVE

She spoke about her decision to enter politics, her refugee background, and the priorities she sets through her role in parliament, Litsa Drousiotou, the ALMA party’s member of parliament for Famagusta, Litsa Drousiotou, spoke from the Alpha Kalokairi studio.

Ms. Drousiotou is originally from Stavros Varosios and, as she noted, is a refugee currently residing in Limassol. Referring to her identity as a refugee, she emphasized that “we are children of refugees” and underscored the need to give refugees the opportunity to advocate for themselves and actively participate in public life.

“Famagusta is not just ‘Free Famagusta,’” she noted, adding that she participates in events and initiatives related to the city and actively expresses her support.

From Dentistry to Politics

Litsa Drousiotou is a dentist with approximately 30 years of professional experience. As she explained, her daily contact with people and her firsthand insight into society’s problems and needs were among the factors that prompted her to enter politics and run for a seat in Parliament.

At the same time, she has been active on a professional level, participating in European forums and organizations related to the dental profession. This experience, as she noted, has allowed her to remain in constant contact with people and engage with a variety of social issues.

“ALMA inspired me”

When asked about her decision to join ALMA, she said that everyone is looking for a place to belong and that this particular party inspired her.

As she noted, it is a clean party, unburdened by the past, where she felt she could contribute and express her ideas.

“This is where I belong, and this is where I can contribute,” was essentially the reasoning that, as she explained, led her to become more actively involved in politics.

Issues in Limassol and Parliamentary Committees

Her work, however, is not limited exclusively to refugee issues and Famagusta.

As she emphasized, a member of parliament represents the whole of Cyprus. As a resident of Limassol, she addressed issues that concern the city on a daily basis, such as traffic, the beaches, the zoo, infrastructure, and other current issues.

Ms. Drousiotou serves, among other roles, on the parliamentary committees on Health, the Environment, Human Rights, and Refugees, drawing on her professional experience in the health sector.

Parliamentary Oversight and New Proposals

In response to a question about whether ALMA is drafting legislative proposals and whether she herself has taken specific initiatives, the MP noted that particular emphasis is currently being placed on parliamentary oversight.

As she explained, a series of questions have been prepared and will be submitted to the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Justice.

She noted that she continues to work throughout the summer and to “present” at events and initiatives, with the aim, as she stated, of maintaining a dynamic presence both on issues concerning Famagusta and on broader issues of concern to Cypriot society.
