Reuters: Head of Haftar's Government Intelligence Service Killed

An explosive device was detonated inside his car outside his home

The head of the military intelligence service of Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA), which controls eastern Libya, was killed yesterday, Monday, when an explosive device detonated inside his car outside his home in the Hawari district of Benghazi, two sources within the security forces told Reuters.

Brigadier General Fawzi Mansouri was killed in the explosion that occurred yesterday afternoon, according to these sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

They did not say who might be responsible for the attack, nor did they provide details about the explosive device.

The officer’s murder underscores the security challenges in Libya, where two rival governments and a myriad of armed groups are vying for power at the national or local level, and the situation remains tense despite the 2020 ceasefire, which had put an end to large-scale hostilities.

This North African country, which has the largest oil reserves on the entire continent, remains split in two, divided between western and eastern regions controlled by various armed groups, following the NATO-backed uprising that led to the overthrow and death of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

The LNA, led by Field Marshal Haftar and his sons, controls most of eastern and southern Libya. It supports the Benghazi-based government. At the same time, the rival, internationally recognized Government of National Unity (GNU) is based in Tripoli and controls most of the western part of the country.
