The Forestry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment is once again issuing an urgent appeal to the public to exercise the utmost caution, as the exceptionally high temperatures, prolonged drought, and strong winds are creating conditions of extremely high risk for the outbreak and rapid spread of forest fires.
In recent days, an increased number of fires have been caused by human activities and actions that could have been prevented. These include the use of tools and machinery that generate heat or sparks, as well as agricultural and other outdoor work.
The public is reminded that from June 1 through September 30, it is prohibited, without the written permission of the Director, within a state forest or within a two-kilometer (2 km) zone from its boundary line, the use, in an open outdoor area, of any tool, machine, device, or other equipment for cutting or welding metals or other materials that, when used, generate heat, a flame or sparks and may cause a fire.
To obtain the relevant permit, the public is asked to contact the competent Forestry Station in the area where the work is to be carried out.
Work carried out within urban residential areas, as well as within industrial or commercial zones, even if they are located within the 2-kilometer zone of a state forest.
At the same time, the Forestry Department expresses grave concern over incidents of arson and calls on the public to exercise increased vigilance. Any suspicious activity or behavior that may be related to arson must be reported immediately to the competent authorities. Citizen cooperation is crucial for both the prevention and investigation of such cases.
Protecting our forests is everyone’s responsibility. Through responsibility, vigilance, and cooperation with the relevant authorities, we can prevent new devastating fires.
If you notice smoke or a fire, call 1407 (Forest Service) or 112 (Fire Department) immediately.
Prevention saves lives, protects forests, and is everyone’s responsibility.
